Day Fifty-Two - 1/11/2012 - Cork

The opening of November has coincided with the arrival of Autumn here in Cork City.  The leaves have changed colour, the air has gotten colder, and the rain has picked up.
I was forewarned by the director of orientation, but I have enough personal experience to testify to the validity that Irish people enjoy talking about the weather.  A lot.  Shopkeepers will mention something about the rain or the wind, but even people walking on the street will engage in conversation about the atmosphere around them.  The weather obsession is not as trivial as it sounds, as Cork experienced some severe flooding a few years ago, this last summer, and mid-October of this year.  Walking along the streets, I repeatedly heard snippets about Hurricane Sandy's destruction as well.  The memories of the flooding are evoked not only from the news from abroad, but from the creeping high tides of the River Lee, augmented by rain.
Good thing I live on the second floor.

  1. And most of the trees here in Wisconsin have lost their leaves by now. I have a gorgeous photo of the red maple tree just across the street from Aunt BetteJo if you care to look on my FB photos.
